Stakeholders Urge Women to Champion Participation in Politics and Strengthen Democracy

Women leaders in politics and business have emphasized the urgent need for Nigerian women to take an active role in supporting and promoting female participation in politics. They also underscored the importance of enhancing economic empowerment programs as a strategic pathway to strengthen the nation’s democracy.

Speaking at the Abuja stakeholders’ meeting themed “Linking Business Women to Action to Consolidate Democracy,” Deputy Country Director of the National Democratic Institute (NDI), Mr. Francis Madugu, highlighted the need for collective action to improve women’s participation in Nigeria’s democratic processes.

Mr. Francis Madugu, Deputy Country Director of the National Democratic Institute (NDI)

“Our democratic and electoral process needs significant improvement. Over the years, we have collectively left our women behind,” Madugu stated. “This initiative ensures increased participation of women in our democratic process by leveraging their successes in business to support women in politics. The data speaks for itself, our women are not performing well in democratic and electoral spaces. It’s time for deliberate, collective action to change this narrative.”

The meeting, part of the NDI’s project led by the Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA), convened networks of women from politics, business associations, and civil society organizations (CSOs) to design actionable strategies for democratic consolidation.

WRAPA Director of Programmes, Yemisi Nathaniel, outlined the meeting’s goal of encouraging collaboration between businesswomen and politicians. “The essence of this meeting is to link businesswomen to action to consolidate democracy,” Nathaniel said. “WRAPA aims to create a coalition of businesswomen and politicians who can leverage their skills and experiences to drive inclusive policymaking and economic development.”

President of the Women in Politics Forum (WIPF), Ebere Ifendu, stressed the importance of financial support from women entrepreneurs for female political participation. “Big entrepreneurs in Nigeria often fund men’s political campaigns but neglect women,” Ifendu noted. “It is crucial for businesswomen to understand that supporting women in politics is ultimately beneficial for everyone.”

Representing the Minister of Women Affairs, Hon. Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Maryam Keshinro, spoke on the vital contributions of women to Nigeria’s GDP.

“Women dominate agriculture, markets, and trade, contributing significantly at both subsistence and commercial levels,” Dr. Keshinro remarked. “Their contributions to the nation’s GDP often surpass those of men. Women are central to community development and economic growth.”

She called on successful women entrepreneurs to mentor and support others in breaking barriers to enter politics, fostering a more inclusive democratic process.

This collaborative effort between WRAPA and NDI highlights the shared commitment to building a democracy that reflects the voices and potential of all Nigerians, particularly women who continue to play pivotal roles in the nation’s progress.

WRAPA Message for the 16 Days of Activism 2024

As we mark the 16 Days of Activism, WRAPA (Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative) stands united in the call to end violence against women and girls (VAWG). This annual global campaign serves as a powerful reminder that violence is not just an individual issue, but a community challenge. It is a call for solidarity, collective responsibility, and the unwavering belief that change is possible when we stand together.

In every home, every community, and every society, we must be the voices that break the silence. We must be the hands that lift up the survivors, and the hearts that reject any form of violence, discrimination, or injustice. Ending violence against women and girls is not just the work of governments, NGOs, or institutions—it requires the active participation of every one of us most especially leaders of Faith and Culture with support of policies and laws from Government as well as cultural and religious punitive measures by way of bye-laws and reward system to a safe community that is unitedly  achieved with women’s girls and youth groups.

When we foster a culture of respect, empathy, and equality, we dismantle the systems of abuse that harm women and girls. Community unity is essential: we need to support survivors, hold perpetrators accountable, and raise awareness about the lasting consequences of violence on women, children, and entire communities.

This 16 Days of Activism, let us commit to building communities where women and girls can live free from fear, where their rights are protected, and where they are valued. Let us challenge the norms that perpetuate violence, and empower all individuals—especially men and boys—to be agents of change.

Together, we can create a world where violence is not tolerated, where every woman and girl has the opportunity to live a life free of violence, and where unity in action becomes the foundation for lasting change.

A Clarion Call to Revisit the North West Development Commission Appointments and Beyond

Mr. President,

In March 2022, the Federal Government approved the Revised National Gender Policy (NGP) and committed to the implementation of its laudable provisions.  Since then, Government, Civil Society Organizations and International Development Partners have been working towards a realization of its vision for an all-inclusive Nigeria in which everyone counts and contributes to development at all levels. Considerable progress has been made in popularizing the NGP, its provisions and benefits with aspirations for its implementation by government, institutions, communities and families.

However, the recent announcement by your good office regarding the composition of the Governing Board of the North West Development Commission (NWDC), cast\s doubts on the government’s commitment to the spirit and letter of National Gender Policy NGP, the Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5), and the 2023 campaign promises of your administration. The expectations of women and other marginalized citizens for intentional Gender Equity and Social Inclusion (GESI) being reflected in every space and intervention stands at risk of being dashed. This leaves little hope for the full utilization of Nigeria’s human capital towards realizing its optimal development.

The Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA) and its network nation-wide, particularly in the seven states of the North West, express grave concern over the absence of female representation on the NWDC inaugural Governing Board membership. This oversight raises critical questions in fostering inclusive governance, which would harness the valuable contributions of all its citizens, through equitable representation in line with Constitutional provisions, free and fair elections. To contemplate and actually omit to appoint women from the seven North West states not only smacks of injustice but also speaks of the relegation of a critical mass who bear the brunt of all the low development indices of the zone. IT CANNOT NOT BE AN ALL MEN’S JOB. Women and other marginalized groups from the zone are best placed to identify, contribute, benefit and evidence the impact of the Commission.

The Executive and the Legislature bear a responsibility to correct the persistent exclusion of women and marginalized groups in Nigeria ‘s political and governance landscape. WRAPA and its partners are advocating for the sincere adoption and implementation of the NGP in every policy, practice and development interventions. Bridging the gap of discrimination, marginalization, and outright exclusion is achievable especially through the conscious implementation the provisions of the NGP, including 50-50% affirmative action for women in leadership and governance.

Our Clarion Call

Sir, the Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA) and its partner organizations hereby make this clarion call a revisit of the appointments to the NWDC Board membership and beyond to include women and award them leadership roles in its governance and operations.

We seek redress for this omission to ensure gender equity, empowerment and social inclusion is a deliberate policy and practice culture at federal, state and local government level institutions and structures. Together, with your good self and office as the President, Federal Republic of Nigeria we can create and grow a political landscape that truly reflects the diversity and strength of our country, paving the way for a more equitable and inclusive North West and a stronger Nigeria!

Thank you.

Saudatu Mahdi,

WRAPA Secretary General

WRAPA Hosts Co-Creation Workshop for the Nana Asma’u Resource Centre (NARC)

WRAPA recently held a Co-Creation Workshop for the establishment and operationalization of the Nana Asma’u Resource Centre (NARC) at its office in Utako, Abuja. Supported by the Ford Foundation, the two-day event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, international organizations, service providers, and survivors of Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG). The purpose of the workshop was to collaboratively design the foundational components of NARC, a center dedicated to providing critical support to survivors of violence in Nigeria.

The Nana Asma’u Resource Centre aims to be a comprehensive hub that offers legal aid, psychosocial support, safe housing, vocational training, and long-term rehabilitation to women and girls affected by VAWG. By engaging key actors from various sectors, WRAPA sought to create a resource centre that not only meets the immediate needs of survivors but also provides sustainable services for their long-term recovery and empowerment.

The workshop was conducted in a hybrid format, allowing both in-person and virtual participation. This inclusive approach ensured that a wide range of perspectives and expertise was represented, contributing to a robust and well-rounded discussion on how best to support survivors. Participants explored several critical areas, including service provision, sustainability mechanisms, and business components necessary for the long-term success of the resource centre.

Facilitated by Abdallah & Amelot Advisors, the workshop featured Assoc. Prof. Abdullahi Ya’u as the lead facilitator and Dr. Muhammad Hadi Musa as co-facilitator. Over the two days, the workshop was divided into four key sessions, focusing on sustainability mechanisms, service providers, business components, and survivor support. Each session provided participants with the opportunity to delve into essential aspects of the centre’s operations, ensuring that the solutions developed were both practical and survivor-centered.

In addition to the discussions held during the workshop, a post-event survey was conducted to gather further insights from participants. This feedback will be instrumental in refining the final plans for NARC and ensuring that the centre’s services align with the actual needs and preferences of survivors and stakeholders alike.

With the successful conclusion of the Co-Creation Workshop, WRAPA is now moving forward with the establishment of the Nana Asma’u Resource Centre. This vital resource will play a critical role in supporting survivors of VAWG in Nigeria, offering them the comprehensive care they need to rebuild their lives. WRAPA and its partners remain committed to ensuring that NARC becomes a beacon of hope and empowerment for women and girls across the country.

Empowering Volunteers to Address Violence Against Women and Girls

For over two decades, the Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA) has championed women’s rights in Nigeria, leading efforts to combat the widespread issue of violence against women and girls (VAWG). Despite the strides made, the persistent prevalence of VAWG highlights the urgent need for continued, intensified action. To strengthen its leadership and broaden its impact, WRAPA has secured a BUILD Grant aimed at bolstering its institutional capacity and resilience, enhancing its ability to protect and empower women and girls across the nation.

WRAPA strategic focus includes a collaborative dialogue on membership drive and partner synergy, key elements in fortifying organizational resilience and driving impactful change. Building on recent zonal engagements and the official launch of its program volunteers, WRAPA will replicate this initiative at the state level. The state-level events will incorporate lessons learned from the zonal meetings, aiming to better engage volunteers in each state and equip them with the skills to effectively fulfill their roles. This Volunteer Corps represents a grassroots movement dedicated to advancing women’s rights and empowerment at the local level.

The persistence of VAWG in Nigeria is driven by complex socio-cultural, economic, and political factors. Addressing these issues requires a multifaceted approach, starting with robust community engagement. WRAPA’s initiative focuses on training volunteers to actively combat VAWG and promote gender equality, creating a foundation for lasting change at the grassroots level. Additionally, enhancing legal and social frameworks is critical to providing protective and supportive environments for victims and at-risk individuals. Through sustained advocacy, this initiative aims to drive significant shifts in policy and societal attitudes toward women’s rights.

The primary objective of this initiative is to train volunteers nationwide in women’s rights and empowerment and officially launch the Volunteer Corps. The event serves several purposes:

  • Empowerment through Training: Equip volunteers with practical skills, tools, and insights to effectively advocate for women’s rights and empowerment in their communities.
  • Inspiration and Mobilization: Inspire volunteers and community members to join the movement for gender equality, fostering a sense of solidarity and collective action.

The events featured participatory activities, presentations, discussions, and role-play exercises, all designed to engage and empower the volunteers.

The expected outcomes are:

  • Empowered volunteers ready to drive positive change and advocate for women’s rights in their communities.
  • Increased awareness and support for women’s rights and empowerment initiatives nationwide.

By combining comprehensive training with a grand launch, WRAPA aims to inspire its volunteers and attract widespread attention to the cause, setting the stage for significant progress in the fight against VAWG in Nigeria.

Zonal Consultative Dialogue and Training to Strengthen Community-Based Groups and Relaunch of WRAPA Programme Volunteer Corp

The Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA) embarked on a transformative journey across the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria, aimed at empowering women and girls to lead efforts in preventing Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) in their communities. This initiative, part of the BUILD Grant project funded by the Ford Foundation, is a critical step toward reinforcing community-level capacity and resilience against VAWG.

The project kicked off with a three-day consultative meeting held in each of the six geopolitical zones, bringing together a diverse group of participants, including WRAPA members, volunteers, government representatives, leaders of faith and culture, and other key stakeholders. These meetings served as a platform to foster dialogue and collaboration on strategies to address VAWG and to establish a robust network of community support systems.

A significant outcome of these meetings was the launch of 10 WRAPA volunteers in each zone. These volunteers, in collaboration with the Women of Resilience, will play a pivotal role in establishing community safe spaces and creating referral pathways for women and girls, especially in hard-to-reach areas. The aim is to ensure that vulnerable women and girls have access to support, protection, and resources in times of need.

During these consultative meetings, WRAPA Secretary General, Hajiya Saudatu Mahdi MFR, delivered an inspiring message to both new and existing members, urging them to remain vigilant and proactive in responding to incidents of VAWG. She emphasized the importance of solidarity among women and girls in combating violence, and called on volunteers to be steadfast in supporting one another in the collective campaign against all forms of violence.

WRAPA and Partners Advance Gender Inclusion and Accountability Through the Improving Electoral Integrity and Accountability (IEIA) Project Close-Out Activities

The Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA), alongside its partners on the Improving Electoral Integrity and Accountability (IEIA) Project, supported by the MacArthur Foundation, has successfully launched the project close-out activities with impactful local engagements across Enugu, Rivers, and Zamfara States. This strategic initiative is part of WRAPA’s ongoing efforts to popularize the 2021 Revised National Gender Policy (NGP) at the federal, state, and local levels. A primary focus of these efforts is to deepen the project’s impact for long-term sustainability by fostering collaborative relationships with traditional rulers in Rivers, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom States.

The project close-out activity aims to build consensus on a gender agenda, facilitating dialogue between traditional rulers and community members. This dialogue is crucial for advancing the uptake and implementation of NGP provisions, thereby promoting Gender Equity and Social Inclusion (GESI) within the target communities.

The IEIA project has recorded significant achievements, contributing to gender-inclusive governance, electoral integrity, and the promotion of women’s rights. The following accomplishments stand out: Open Governance, Increased Women’s Inclusion in Decision-Making, Anti-Corruption Campaigns, Gender-Sensitive Responses to COVID-19 and Emergencies, Women’s Involvement in the Governorship Debate, Reduction of Electoral Violence and Improved Women’s Participation in Election.
