With the support of the Ford Foundation, the Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA), in partnership with the Centre for Islamic Civilization and Inter-Faith Dialogue (CICID) at Bayero University Kano, convened a two-day strategic gathering of leading Islamic experts to validate action research aimed at mitigating violence against women.
The convening brought together respected scholars to critically examine section 55(1)(a–d) of Nigeria’s Criminal and Penal Code in light of Qur’an 4:3. Through deep engagement with Quranic exegesis, Islamic jurisprudence, and Nigerian law, participants explored faith-aligned and legally sound solutions that resonate with local realities.
Discussions focused on how cultural, religious, and legal interpretations can be harmonized to protect the dignity and rights of women while strengthening peaceful and equitable family and community relationships.
At the conclusion of the dialogue, the scholars made a firm commitment to raise awareness and sensitize communities on the prevention of violence against women and girls. They pledged to leverage sermons, media outreach, and other culturally relevant channels to promote values of compassion, justice, and mutual respect.
This convening marks an important step in building community-driven, faith-informed strategies that not only challenge harmful practices but also inspire lasting change rooted in both Islamic principles and human rights standards.
